Saturday of Lazarus
Between Lent and Holy Week stands the Saturday of Lazarus. Lent officially ends the day before, with Holy Week beginning the day after. The day commemorates Jesus raising His friend Lazarus from the dead. The liturgy is also described as a teaching liturgy. At various intervals during the service, Father Chris would teach about the various parts of the liturgy, sharing their historical origins, as well as connecting them to today. It made the seemingly random order of ceremony no longer seem random, and actually enriching.
Also joining in to serve as a priest for Holy Week, was Father Chris’s dad.
Rejoice, rejoice, O Bethany!
On this day God came to thee,
And in Him the dead are made alive,
As it is right for He is the Life.
